What is the Eastern Lunisolar Calendar?

The Lunisolar calendar (often simply called the Lunar Calendar) is a profound timekeeping system that tracks both the phases of the Moon and the time of the solar year. While the Gregorian calendar (Solar) is excellent for standardizing international commerce, the Lunisolar calendar maps the subtle cosmic energies of the universe.

It is the foundational framework for all Eastern metaphysics, including Feng Shui, BaZi (Four Pillars of Destiny), Zi Wei Dou Shu (Purple Star Astrology), and the I Ching.

Why Convert Dates?

  • Astrology & Fortune Telling: To generate an accurate birth chart (BaZi or Zi Wei Dou Shu), you must convert your Western birthdate into the Lunar format. Even a one-day mistake will result in a completely incorrect astrological reading.
  • Selecting Auspicious Days: Date Selection for weddings, signing contracts, or moving into a new home relies entirely on the Lunar Calendar's Stems and Branches.
  • Festivals & Rituals: Major cultural events like the Lunar New Year (Spring Festival), Mid-Autumn Festival, and ancestral death anniversaries are scheduled according to the Lunar Calendar.

How Does This Tool Work?

The relationship between the Solar and Lunar calendars is highly complex. A lunar year is roughly 11 days shorter than a solar year. To keep the calendars synchronized, an "intercalary month" (a leap month) is added to the Lunar Calendar approximately every three years.

Our tool utilizes high-precision astronomical algorithms based on the exact phases of the moon and solar longitudes calibrated for the Indochina Time Zone (UTC+7). It automatically detects leap months and calculates the exact Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches for your requested date.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use this for Western Astrology?

No. Western disciplines like Horoscopes (Zodiac Signs) or Tarot readings rely entirely on the Solar Gregorian calendar. The Lunar date is only necessary for Eastern disciplines like Feng Shui or Chinese Astrology.

Why might the date differ slightly from Chinese calendars?

The Vietnamese Lunar Calendar is calculated based on the UTC+7 time zone, while the Chinese Lunar Calendar uses UTC+8. Because the "new moon" phase may occur just before midnight in Vietnam but right after midnight in China, the start of a lunar month can occasionally differ by one day between the two systems. Our tool is perfectly calibrated for UTC+7.
